CENTRAL DISTRICT LAY SERVANT MINISTRY
CERTIFICATION CLASSES – OCTOBER 28-29, 2016
The Central District of the North Alabama Conference is offering several classes for Lay Servant credit on Friday evening, October 28th, from 5:30 to 9:00 PM, and Saturday, October 29th, from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM. The classes will be held in the Methodist Center on the campus of Birmingham Southern College. The cost of each class is $40 and includes meals (supper, light breakfast, lunch, and snacks) but does not include course material. A list of the course material and the price on the Cokesbury website is shown on the attached registration form. The course material should be obtained before class begins. The classes which will be offered are:
Basic Lay Servant Class
This Class will be led by Rev. Jack Hinnen. This class will provide the foundation for Lay Servant Ministries. Completion of this class is required for all who wish to participate in Lay Servant Ministry.
Preaching
This Advanced Class will be led by Rev. Michael Holly. This class will provide the foundations for preparing and delivering a sermon. This is one of the six classes required for those who wish to serve as Lay Speakers. It also satisfies requirements for re-certification of Certified Lay Servants.
Leading Prayer
This Advanced Class will be led by Rev. Kay Mutert. This class will provide the foundation to effectively prepare and lead various prayer forms. This is one of the six classes required for those who wish to serve as Lay Speakers. It also satisfies requirements for re-cerfication of Certified Lay Servants.
Polity & Organization
This Advanced Class will be led by Rev. Ron Schultz. This class will provide an overview of the structure and organization of the United Methodist Church. This is also one of the six classes required for those who wish to serve as Lay Speakers, and may also be used for Certified Lay Servant credit.

NOTE: The Book of Discipline requires 10 hours of class time for certification. All who are taking these classes for the purpose of certification must be present for the entire workshop to receive full credit.
