BPUMC_Podcast_LogoThe Heart of a Child and a Mother’s Care, by Rev. Mike Holly

In the New Testament, there are several women who are lifted up as examples of faithful followers of Jesus who are pass on the faith to the next generation. The mother of Timothy, Paul’s apprentice, comes to mind. Her care and nurture is matched by her desire to share the wisdom of faith with her own son.

Each new generation experiences a shift in how they live in the world as well as in deciding which information they will cherish and which information they will let slip into the history books. Some culture is lost forever and some is kept alive by those who see its value. My guess is that the culture that lasts is that which is either timeless or it is that which is passed on in love and not out of guilt.

A key characteristic of good parenting is the ability to love a child unconditionally. As we read in 1 Corinthians 13 today, love is a powerful force — particularly when it originates from God. Today, we must rediscover how unconditional love will be an essential tool in our ability to pass on what we value and treasure to each new generation.

The Word

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
