BPUMC_Podcast_LogoWhere Is The Wisdom We Need?“, by Rev. Mike Holly

Historians have turned to both archaeology and the Bible among other historical documents to study the early diets of civilizations. In 2013, my wife, Julie, and I participated in a dig in Jerusalem where we went through the dirt and rubbish underneath the Temple Mount to look for historical items. Occasionally you would find shards of pottery or even a coin, but most of the time you would find olive pits and dirt. Even today, olive groves grow on the Mount of Olives. Historians have traced milk and honey to the diets of children in particular in earlier civilizations. This is very interesting in that God proclaimed to the Israelite that they would leave Egypt behind and move into a land flowing with milk and honey.

Milk and honey are thus understood to be both delicious and nourishing. Honey itself is a natural sweetener. It is good for us and it is tastes sweet and can even improve other nutritious foods. In today’s passage, honey is linked to Scripture and wisdom from God which is passed down from the wise and righteous. This wisdom is also nourishing and sweet — providing for us a good way forward in life. The wisdom that Proverbs talks about here is not some secret life hack that will provide us with more ease and contentment in life. Instead, it is the very core knowledge that we need — the very truth about who we are and what we need and how we are to live. Having this wisdom will not only make life sweeter, but we will find that we will have a future in God.”

The Word

Proverbs 24:13-14

My child, eat honey, for it is good,
and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
if you find it, you will find a future,
and your hope will not be cut off.
