Lent and Easter at Bluff Park – 2019

The Lent and Easter season is an important and cherished time in the life of the church. We prepare our hearts to meet our risen Savior at the empty tomb. Throughout the season of Lent we meet for weekly prayer services. Each Sunday our sermons are focused on taking a Leap of Faith. And we gather for special holiday worship services.

Pastor’s Message

King David and his son, Solomon, were blessed with something towards the end of David’s life: Israel found itself in relative peace with its neighbors. Wars and skirmishes were over. Solomon would be able to turn his attention to the development of the City of David, Jerusalem, and the development of a permanent Temple devoted to the worship of God.

David essentially says to the leaders of the people of God living in Jerusalem: God has blessed you. Now it is time to bless God. He instructs them to seek God by setting their minds and hearts towards Him. He asks them to invest all that they have into building this Temple.

I believe that we are all like those leaders so long ago. Yes, there is still uncertainty in our world as well as wars and rumors of wars. At the same time, we are blessed beyond imagination with information, access to clean water, healthy food, and even the ability to enjoy recreation. We are blessed. And when we are blessed, we had better seek God and invest in him lest we begin to believe that we alone are responsible for our blessings.

The Word

1 Chronicles 22:17-19

David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon, saying, “Is not the Lord your God with you? Has he not given you peace on every side? For he has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before the Lord and his people. Now set your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God. Go and build the sanctuary of the Lord God so that the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God may be brought into a house built for the name of the Lord.”

Pastor’s Message

Today is Laity Sunday and this year it marks the beginning of our Stewardship Campaign for 2016. The laity of the church are the folks who are not ordained for ministry. This includes church members, volunteers and staff who work in various ministries throughout the church. The United Methodist Church believes that the ministry of the laity is the work of mission or ministry to which each and every believer is called. As Christians we are all called to this ministry – not just clergy. Each of us has a responsibility to proclaim the Good News and reach out to others in love. Without the laity, there would be no church.

This morning, you will see that we have a wide variety of laity leading worship. These wonderful folks are just a portion of the immense wealth of skilled and empowered church members and volunteers at Bluff Park UMC. If you are interested in both learning more about the ministries offered in our church as well as how to get involved, please attend each Sunday this month and see the ministries shared and the people who help make them happen. Feel free to ask them about these ministries and what they entail.

Finally, be prayerfully considering this month how you and your family will live out your commitments as members of this church. Each and everyone of us are ministers, not just the clergy. And we have all signed on to minister with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. These are our vows. They are the way we have promised to serve God and give to God’s ministry through this congregation. Are you ready to take your next step?

The Word

1 Peter 2:9-10,21

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.
