The Word

Luke 10:1-9

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

Pastor’s Message

Today is Laity Sunday and this year it marks the beginning of our Stewardship Campaign for 2016. The laity of the church are the folks who are not ordained for ministry. This includes church members, volunteers and staff who work in various ministries throughout the church. The United Methodist Church believes that the ministry of the laity is the work of mission or ministry to which each and every believer is called. As Christians we are all called to this ministry – not just clergy. Each of us has a responsibility to proclaim the Good News and reach out to others in love. Without the laity, there would be no church.

This morning, you will see that we have a wide variety of laity leading worship. These wonderful folks are just a portion of the immense wealth of skilled and empowered church members and volunteers at Bluff Park UMC. If you are interested in both learning more about the ministries offered in our church as well as how to get involved, please attend each Sunday this month and see the ministries shared and the people who help make them happen. Feel free to ask them about these ministries and what they entail.

Finally, be prayerfully considering this month how you and your family will live out your commitments as members of this church. Each and everyone of us are ministers, not just the clergy. And we have all signed on to minister with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. These are our vows. They are the way we have promised to serve God and give to God’s ministry through this congregation. Are you ready to take your next step?

The Word

1 Peter 2:9-10,21

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.
